Tuesdays With Tyler…The Days of Whine and Potty Training

It seems like a lot longer but we’ve been trying to potty train Tyler for a little over three months now. His teacher at daycare tells me he’s doing pretty well there, but he’s regressed at home.  Now he either refuses to go to the potty or if he does get on there he tells me, “My pee pee won’t come out.”

He loves the book My Big Boy Potty, but I think he just likes it as a story.  I say, “Come on Tyler, don’t you remember? ‘Michael sat and sat.’  Give it some more time!”  But he jumps right off.

Oh and the reward method?  I can’t even get Tyler to listen to my ideas, let alone agree to them.  It worked in the beginning but I think he was in it for the stickers.

We have him only in pull-ups but we are using them like they are diapers and they are twice as expensive.

I think it’s hard to be a woman training a boy.  Is it normal for him to sit on the potty and act like he is milking a cow?

Considering myself a patient mommy I bought one of those gentle potty training books, but I think I want my money back.  I don’t think I will ever look upon this time of Tyler’s life as a wonderful bonding experience that we both treasured.

About mamasick

Emily Cullen is a pen-name. A former local radio personality for seven years, I still remain active in the voiceover business. My husband, “Grant”, and I have been married since 2002 and have already experienced the “worse, “poorer, ” and “sickness ” of marriage. We both suffer from chronic illnesses and diseases which have progressed. My diseases include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and most, recently and seriously, Lupus. Despite all of the challenges we have faced, we were able to have a little boy, “Tyler,” born in September of 2006, which is the best thing to ever happen to us. Tyler has been classified as a “special needs” child with diagnoses which include Anxiety, OCD, and Tourette’s Syndrome. We also share our home with two cats. We live in New Jersey and I enjoy reading fiction and learning more about taking care of my son. Before my son, I used to enjoy watching movies…watching television for that matter! Before Lupus I enjoyed fine dining and fine wine. No longer able to work, I am now wondering, “What will I do with the rest of my (somewhat) young life?” Blogging sounds like a good start!

Would he be more interested in learning to pee standing up? I know a couple of little boys trained that way at R’s pre-school. They used cherrios to inspire good aim (float ‘em in the toilet and tell the boy he has to ‘sink’ them)

It took over a year for us to be able to reliably think of R as being potty trained. The final push through bit? Pre-school. They take them to the potty every 40 minutes. Once I started doing that at home, it kind of all fell into place. (I also told her that the store wouldn’t sell me any more packages of Pull-Ups. EVER.)(I was a little at the end of my rope, does it show?;) )

Good luck. I would NEVER think of potty-training as a wonderful bonding experience. More like ‘the year I learned to love vodka’

I trained my boy in 2 weeks.
We went through the paper and found a present he’d like to have once the diapers were gone. WE cut the picture out and taped it to the bathroom wall. I took him Pee every 20 min til he went then I gave him an hour break. only waiting 5 min and right to underwear no pull ups.
    good luck it not easy
Thanks for the vote I so appreciate it
