Throwback Thursday: My First Bloggers’ Night Out!

Inspired by Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop.

2.) Throwback Thursday! Find and share an old photo and let it inspire a blog post.

This picture was taken in November of 2008 and it was from a meet-up of the then New Jersey Moms Blog.

I don’t know if even felt like a blogger yet. I had been laid off earlier that year and diagnosed with Lupus. No longer working in the traditional sense, my mind had some freedom to create and I found myself “writing in my head”. I was chronically ill, I was a mom to a toddler and I had something to say.

Somehow I knew that the New Jersey Moms Blog needed more writers. I got in touch with Jill Asher who was heading up the Silicon Valley Moms Group. She had me send the two pieces I had written and told me I was accepted.

Pictured in the photo from left to right are Shannon Entin, me, a woman I do not know (sorry whomever you are!) and Monica Brand, whom I still keep in touch with.

I was also thrilled to meet Vanessa of Chefdruck and Liz of This Full House.

It was a bit overwhelming. I was probably the only woman there who did not have her own blog, I was only writing for the New Jersey Moms Blog. But I sensed that this night was special and I felt energized to be in the company of these women.

Fast forward to the present and I celebrated five years of Mama Sick in May.

About mamasick

Emily Cullen is a pen-name. I suffer from chronic illnesses and diseases which include Bipolar Disorder, Asthma, Diabetes and Fibromyalgia. I had battled Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis but there is no longer evidence of me having these diseases and my Rheumatologist has declared them to be "burnt out" of my system. I am separated from my husband, “Grant”. Our son, “Tyler” was born in September of 2006 and suffers from tics and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and is delayed in fine and gross motor skills. In my blog I seek to let sick moms know that they are not the only ones going through this, and to educate people about what can happens when one becomes catastrophically ill. I also strive to break down stereotypes of what a “Welfare Mom” is like. Anything that I have gone through due to being sick, is written on the pages of Mama Sick.
